Ticketing Rules and Policies -- All Groups

For events taking place in opera houses, movie theatres, concert halls, etc., members are responsible for purchasing their own tickets. Purchase links will be provided on the event pages.

Discount Codes

Effective on 10/6/17 discount codes will be on the event pages, as both groups are currently private.  If the ability to keep a group private is removed by Meetup or if there is any reason for the organizer to make the group public, they will be hidden in the RSVP process in this manner:

When you RSVP "Yes", look at the question spaces for this information. If you forgot the code or wrote it down incorrectly, click "Change" on the RSVP to see it, write it down, then close the window without changing your RSVP.

If this is done in the future it is so that this information will be kept exclusive to the members of any of my groups.

Any member caught publishing discount codes or other confidential information in the comments section, "Conversations", or otherwise disseminating them without the organizer's written authorization will be removed from the group and banned from future membership. No dues will be refunded.

Some discount codes will have a limited window. If there is a deadline on the discount code, please do not complain to the organizer or event host. We have no control over a venue's decree of a deadline.

If there is no discount code announced, there isn't one for that performance. Please do not ask about this, as we cannot change the situation.

Sale of Tickets Between Members

If a member has a ticket or tickets to an event s/he cannot use, the comment area for that event is to be used for resale of those tickets. This can occur in emergencies or when a screening or show is sold out. To do this in the most time-efficient way possible:

1. Ticket Seller posts in the comment section the number of tickets and the price. Seller then leaves on his/her cell phone or remains logged into the email account associated with Meetup.
2. Members interested in buying the ticket(s) then use the Private Message system to contact the seller. They must include a telephone number at which they can be immediately reached. To use this system, click on the seller's name and use the appropriate icon on the profile page.
3. Buyer and seller make arrangements offline with no additional postings in the comment area.
4. Seller changes his/her RSVP and deletes original message. Buyer RSVPs if they didn't do so already.

The above procedure is designed to minimize time lags during the process. Due to the time lag of notification on posted replies this is crucial. Removing posts after the issue is resolved also serves to eliminate clutter in the comments section.

Processing / Convenience / Service Fees

To the degree possible we will try to help you avoid paying these fees. However, they are a growing reality as more organizations and venues (especially smaller ones) outsource the ticketing process to specialist companies.

We don't like this any more than you do. However, we cannot do anything about the imposition of such policies and we cannot get them waived. The best we can do is to make you aware of them as we learn each company's / organization's policies. The list that follows will be revised as we learn the information.

There may be occasions where we will impose a small organizer fee for list-building for an exclusive performance or similar event. This is to cover administrative time on the organizer or host's part.

Symphony Space (Revised on 9/7/17)

The only way to avoid paying any fees is to purchase your ticket(s) in person at the box office. Since the box office hours are 1-6PM Tuesday – Sunday, this may not always be practical. There is a $5 fee per ticket over the phone or online. At this time this is still less expensive than the full ticket price of $24 after our usual discount.

Keep in mind that the Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theatre is general admission while the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre has numbered seating. For events in the latter members are encouraged to post their seat numbers when they have purchased their tickets so that other members can order tickets in their vicinity.

Our discount codes now work at the box office. It is unlikely that we will be able to get discount codes more than one month in advance of a screening date. The current discount of 33% ($8 off $24) more than compensates for the processing fee if you need to call to insure getting the desired seat in the PJS theatre.

Historically there has been an average of one event per month. If the discount code is in effect for the next event when you are attending one, purchasing the next ticket upon arrival will be your best option.

Chelsea Opera

Chelsea Opera now requires a minimum of ten tickets sold for the group to receive their discount, which is generous. To insure that minimum we will require pre-payment with a deadline so the tickets can be purchased together. Pre-payment will also include OvationTix's processing fee (approx. 15% of the ticket price) and a small administration fee that includes the PayPal fee. In the event that the minimum is not reached by the deadline, the ticket price will be refunded. PayPal and administration fees are not refundable.

Carnegie Hall

Discount code policies and window of opportunity will vary by event. Each event's fine print policy information will be in the event notice.

The New York Opera Meetup -- Concert Hall and Opera House Etiquette

Opera House and Concert Hall Etiquette 1.  Arrive at least a half hour early so you can be settled before the stated start time. 2.  If you need to leave your seat for any reason during the performance, remember that the venue is unlikely to allow you to resume your seat until the current piece is between movements or has ended.  Major o pera houses will not allow you to resume your seat until intermission. 3.  No food or drink is permitted, especially any that will make any noise.  This is not limited to potato chips. 4.  If you have chocolate, cough drops, or hard candy, remember that crinkling paper will annoy other attendees.  Either unwrap the item in advance or between musical pieces or acts. 5.  No talking during any part of the performance, for obvious reasons. 6.  No leaning your heads together.  This obstructs the view of the person behind you. 7.  If you have a cold, bring cough drops and follow rule #4....
