The New York Opera Meetup -- Club Rules

Age Restrictions

Minimum age for membership is 18.

Annual Dues

These have been suspended, perhaps permanently.

General

Civilized behavior is required at all times. Anyone posting competing event or alternate performance date information on event pages or who shares discount codes or other confidential information without written permission from the organizer will be expelled from the group with no refund of dues and banned from future membership. Complaints regarding behavior not detailed on this page will be taken seriously and dealt with on a case by case basis.

Communication

Members are responsible for reading event pages thoroughly before posting questions or contacting the event host or leadership team. Alert us to any mistakes, but please make sure that any questions you may have are not already answered in the text of the event page before posting a comment or question. Organizers and event hosts will not answer questions that are already answered in the event notice itself.

The comments area is not to be used in an uncivil manner. Personal attacks and arguments among members will not be tolerated either before or after the event. Violation of this rule will result in permanent expulsion from the group and no refund of dues.

Please note that if you are not subscribed to organizer or leadership team messages you may miss important general information. We promise not to inundate you with them as we know New Yorkers are busy people, so we will only send out general communication in the event of something important.

Event hosts and organizers cannot be expected to respond to last-minute cell phone calls, text messages, comments, or questions posted to the event page. Most of us travel on public transportation where this is not possible and all of us turn off our cell phones at least 30 minutes prior to curtain time. We have on-site duties that take absolute priority. Additionally, members are strongly urged to adjust their communication settings to receive updates on the events they say "Yes" to in case an update affects their decision to attend.

With regard to contacting other members, please do not personally contact members whom you have not yet met at a Meetup event.  All Meetup members have the right to feel safe when they join the platform and individual groups.

RSVP

RSVPs will always have a deadline. Organizers cannot be expected to check the site on their cell phones on event dates during the event or while in transit. Deadlines will vary by event type but typically will be 48 hours prior to an event. Free concerts and the free screenings on Lincoln Center Plaza will have a deadline of the day before the event. This is subject to change if a performance is known to be sold out.

If you RSVP a “Yes” you will be expected to attend; Although Meetup's site allows this be revised up to the moment the event begins, we ask that you do so before the RSVPs close.  This deadline is typically 48 hours before the event start time.

Please do not RSVP "No" unless it's to change it from a "Yes" It sends unnecessary notifications to the hosts (and our Inboxes are already crowded). Also, please do not post the reason for the change to the comments area unless you are selling or giving away your ticket. We should keep the comments area uncluttered so that important information doesn't get buried.

Revised on 10/6/17:  If you are unable to attend an event, do not post the reason to the comment area.  If you feel a need to explain this to the host or organizer, please send a private message.  Comments provoke unnecessary e-mails to other members and if you are attending an alternate performance/screening date this has the potential to fragment the group.  This will come under the Three Strikes Rule.

Event Cancellation (General)

Events are subject to cancellation due to low attendance, venue issues, or emergencies. Organizers / hosts will make the effort to notify attendees, so please see the Communication rule, above. For outdoor events, see the relevant page.

Photography

Many venues we will be meeting in have rules against it; these are to be respected. Other members may also object to being photographed and this should also be respected. While organizers like to upload event photos we don't want to have to hear that a member objects to their image in them and wants the photos removed.

Arrival Time

We recognize that many people's work hours do not allow them to arrive early for public events like free concerts. We ask that people arrive early to allow our members time to socialize and the ability to sit together, as this is not currently possible in our core performance venues. Many places will now not permit people to save seats, as this frequently causes unpleasantness with other patrons. If you are unable to arrive early because of work or some other commitment, please let us know by posting in the Comments area of the event page.

Arrival times for live performances will typically be announced as half an hour prior to curtain time to allow members to settle in prior to the overture.

No-Show Policy

While no-shows do not present a critical problem at most free events this is not the case with regard to restaurant reservations or events with limited tickets / seating. No-shows at restaurants will hurt the group's reputation and the organizers' credibility with the venue and will cause them to not accept future reservations from us. This is a very serious problem as there are few affordable eateries in the vicinity of Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. The end result is not only that organizers need to find new venues; it also results in reluctance to schedule more events of this type. No-shows at events with limited space / ticket availability rob wait-listed members of attendance opportunities which is both rude and unfair.

For these reasons, no-shows at such events or event components without 48 hours' advance notice will be dropped from the group and banned from future membership.

Last-Minute No-Show Emergency Situations

This rule comes from a situation encountered in another group.

If you have a ticket at Will Call that you cannot use, cannot get refunded, and it is at least four hours prior to curtain time, call the box office and check the policy of the venue to see if they would be willing to surrender it to someone else. If they are willing to do so, please designate the host or organizer to accept it so it can be used. Then please post a comment to the event page to see if anyone is looking to score a ticket. Call the host or organizer's cell phone to identify who will be getting the ticket or if no one has come forward. The ticket may be given to someone else.

In view of the fact that most hosts and organizers travel on public transportation and live at least one hour away from a typical venue, it is not realistic to expect them to be able to do anything within any shorter time frame than four hours. Ideally, this situation will be rare.

Organizer and Member Contact Policy

Inquiries about Setting Up Events If you have a performance organization and wish us to have an event at your performance, we must insist that you contact the organizer two to three weeks in advance.  In addition, we would appreciate providing discounted tickets for our members.  Keep in mind that the calendar for this group is planned in advance even though it is not all posted in advance so if you have a limited calendar of performances there may be a conflict. Above all, do not contact us the day before your proffered performance.  These are not Meetup groups that are planned on a last-minute basis. Inquiries about Our Members It is a reasonable assumption that the New York Opera Meetup has professional musicians and singers among its members. The British Film and Television Group may have film professionals.   We welcome them with open arms. If you are a concert promoter, artist agent, or cinema professional and wish to contact any of our members you must do so direc

The New York Opera Meetup -- Concert Hall and Opera House Etiquette

Opera House and Concert Hall Etiquette 1.  Arrive at least a half hour early so you can be settled before the stated start time. 2.  If you need to leave your seat for any reason during the performance, remember that the venue is unlikely to allow you to resume your seat until the current piece is between movements or has ended.  Major o pera houses will not allow you to resume your seat until intermission. 3.  No food or drink is permitted, especially any that will make any noise.  This is not limited to potato chips. 4.  If you have chocolate, cough drops, or hard candy, remember that crinkling paper will annoy other attendees.  Either unwrap the item in advance or between musical pieces or acts. 5.  No talking during any part of the performance, for obvious reasons. 6.  No leaning your heads together.  This obstructs the view of the person behind you. 7.  If you have a cold, bring cough drops and follow rule #4.  If you have a very runny nose, bring enough tissues to t
