Outdoor Event Cancellation Policy -- All Groups

Outdoor (usually free) events posted for these groups are usually subject to cancellation in the event of adverse weather conditions. A few will have a contingency plan in the event of rain, but many do not and will not have rain dates. Event notices will have a link posted to this page and information relevant to the specific venue will be included. The following list of known venue/event practices will be revised as necessary:

City Parks

Events in city parks are subject to cancellation by the Parks Department. Historically, the Parks Department cancels an event about three hours prior to a performance start time. This will be posted on the website of the park hosting the event. A link will be posted to the relevant park's website to allow members to check if there is cause for concern.

Washington Square Music Festival

This organization has a contingency plan with alternative locations for their concerts in the event of rain. These locations will be provided to members in good standing who RSVP that they will be attending the event.

Lincoln Center Plaza

There is no blanket policy at the Metropolitan Opera regarding cancellation of their free HD screenings in the event of a forecast of less than a dangerous event such as a hurricane. The only cancellation in the history of this event was the weekend Hurricane Irene was forecast to hit New York in 2011.

In our experience and observation a screening in progress will continue if it rains. Viewers typically remain seated, raise their umbrellas, and wait it out. In the event of thunder and lightning, however, it is likely that the screening would be stopped immediately and an announcement made for the safety of the viewers. We have been told that any cancellation would be announced on their website. There are no rain dates for these events.

Other

In the event that a venue or organization has no specific policy it will be the practice of these groups to cancel outdoor evening events as of 2PM on the event date in the event of a forecast of heavy rain or extreme cold.

Met Opera Plaza Screenings -- Free!

Sundays at the Met with the World

The Metropolitan Opera has long been overdue for Sunday matinées. While Peter Gelb is anticipating new audiences it is my belief that – like the HD broadcasts – it will be also favored by growth among current audiences: Suburbanites. Many suburbanites worry about being able to catch the last train to Scarsdale or Sag Harbor after late curtains on weeknights. This was why the performance start time was moved back to 7:30 a few seasons ago. However, 30-minute intermissions (presumably to enable more business for the bars and the gift shop) have eaten up much of the difference; curtain calls have not been correspondingly earlier, especially for longer works. Presenting works such as Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg on Sunday afternoons will work very well. Families. If the Met will use this opportunity to present “family-friendly” titles Mr Gelb can anticipate more children who will eventually become adult opera lovers. Working Adults. More of this ...
